TYPES OF FAILURES

As an human being we all dream, think, plan, invest and toil for ‘success’ , ‘failure’ is never on our ‘desire list’ but all of us have to taste failure sometimes, even gods and superheroes tasted it. Ram ji failed to save Sita mata from being kidnapped by Ravan, all our superheroes get beaten up by powerful villains in the start and so on. The message is ‘FAILURE IMPROVES THE VALUE AND QUALITY OF SUCCESS’.

In my post “Are you sure about your Failure?” I told you that 'failure is a relative term'. Today I will discuss about the types of failure we face in our life as every failure has its own story to tell i.e. reason.  Category wise it can be of three types:

  1. Failure to anticipate
  2. Failure to perceive
  3. Failure to carry out a task

Anticipations might be described more as hunches, or gut feelings of what may happen. They usually involve a fair assessment of current conditions, and are based on how the current conditions are most likely to continue to develop. Anticipations help to serve more of an if/then type of role, and they allow for adjustments in a trading plan. Please do not get confused between the terms ‘prediction and anticipation’.

Fig: NASA Sunspot Number Predictions in March 2004 for Solar cycle 23 and 24, which did not come true. Even in 2006 a new scientific model predicted with 98% accuracy that cycle 24 would start at the end of 2007, and that its peak would be higher than cycle 23.Nevertheless, the cycle started two years later and the current prediction says the peak will be lower than the previous one.

Predictions are often grand proclamations of what is going to happen, and they usually include details about even how events will unfold. It tend to be stubborn, brash and unyielding, leaving no margin for error or revisions.

Now, beaming our attention to one of the oldest fields in Psychology i.e. Perception. It refers to interpretation of what we take in through our senses.  The way we perceive our environment is what makes us different from other animals and different from each other.

Fig:The Necker cube and Rubin vase can be perceived in more than one way.

“Everything you see or hear or experience in any way at all is specific to you. You create a universe by perceiving it, so everything in the universe you perceive is specific to you.” – Douglas Adams

Unlike our physical abilities, our perception is 'limitless', and it is the one thing we can change and develop. With experience, organisms can learn to make finer perceptual distinctions, and learn new kinds of categorization. Wine-tasting, the reading of X-ray images and music appreciation are applications of this process in the human sphere. Research has focused on the relation of this to other kinds of learning, and whether it takes place in
peripheral sensory systems or in the brain's processing of sense information.

Finally, carrying out a task depends on present circumstances, resources, various kinds of skill required etc.It majorly consists of execution according to the per-defined guidelines and set deadlines. Its requires coordination or management of various entities required for execution.

We should understand that we failed at which stage and try to find the reason behind it. Failure an opportunity to learn and improve but for that we must know that when, where and why we failed, merely shedding tears on the undesirable outcome is flushing out the ‘golden opportunity’ with buckets of  ‘naturally free eye-made salty water’.
